As higher education institutions in Taiwan actively promote the "Transnational Higher Education EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) Initiative," assisting discipline-specific faculty members in balancing subject-matter expertise with effective English instruction has become a key element in higher education transformation.
Session 1
Topic: Interactive EMI Teaching: Formative Assessments and Entry Points That Get Students Talking
Speakers:
Nate Fifield 方努田, EMI Advisor, Foundation for Scholarly Exchange, Fulbright Taiwan
Dr. On-Lei Annie Kwok 郭安妮, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University
Dr. Katherine Kim 金藝璘, Professor, Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University
Date/ Time:
Tuesday, November 3, 2026 12:00pm-13:30pm
Description:
In this workshop, instructors will explore simple ways to make their classes more interactive and student-centered. We will look at how to use formative assessments to check student understanding in real time, and why students often stay silent when asked, "Does anyone have any questions?" Participants will learn four principles for creating welcoming "entry points" where students can engage: asking focused questions, modeling answers, building questions into lecture slides, and varying response types. Participants will then hear from instructors at Taiwanese universities about how they apply these principles in their own classes, and how working with a Fulbright Taiwan EMI advisor helped them brainstorm and put interactive teaching strategies into practice.
